Living Retirement — Your Guided Path: Self, Hurdles, Future, Action

Retirement Transition Coaching

Retirement is not a destination.
It's an unfolding transition.

The Programme

Structured, accelerated thinking for one of life's biggest transitions

Living Retirement was developed by Dr Andy Nevill and Professor Mark Tooley, who co-founded the programme and wrote all of its material from their own coaching and lived experience.

It provides an opportunity for structured, accelerated thinking — helping to compress the time it can take to make sense of this transition. The programme constructively challenges your thinking and encourages deep reflection on what matters most: the things that give you energy and bring you joy.

"The purpose of this programme is not to produce a perfect plan, but to help you navigate this transition with greater awareness, confidence, and curiosity."

How It Works

Four stages, one unfolding journey

An introductory session, followed by four coaching sessions — each paired with a guided exercise to complete beforehand.

01

Finding out

Understanding more about yourself — your values, identity and what has shaped you.

02

Facing

Confronting the retirement transition honestly, including its real challenges.

03

Looking ahead

Building a clearer sense of what the next chapter could look like for you.

04

Taking action

Turning reflection into grounded, confident next steps.

Each stage is supported by guided exercises completed in your own time, so coaching sessions build on real reflection rather than starting cold.

Who It's For

Built for people who've worked in health and care

Approaching retirement

Preparing well, ahead of time

For people approaching retirement from the NHS or a similar health-related setting who want to feel more informed, prepared and in control of the transition ahead — rather than reacting to it once it arrives.

Already retired

Finding the right path

For people who have already retired and may be struggling with parts of the transition — perhaps sensing they haven't yet found the right path for themselves, and wanting space to work that out.

Your Coaches

Dr Andy Nevill

Dr Andy Nevill

Retirement Transition Coach

Chartered Engineer
Chartered Manager
Chartered Scientist

Andy's work focuses on helping people make sense of the transition beyond work, particularly after careers that have shaped routines, identity, relationships and ways of thinking over many years. As the structure work provides begins to fall away, questions about purpose, connection and how to live often become more pressing — and Andy helps people step back, think clearly, and move forward with greater intention.

He brings a distinctive mix of technical leadership, organisational development and coaching experience, including extensive work within the NHS supporting clinicians and technical specialists moving into leadership roles. With training in executive coaching, mentoring and workplace mediation, Andy is known for a calm, thoughtful and practical style — creating space for honest reflection and grounded decision-making during periods of uncertainty.

Outside this work, Andy has a longstanding interest in sustainable living and the environment, having taught himself property construction and renovation, and maintains a creative practice working with wood, metal and masonry inspired by natural geometry.

Professor Mark Tooley

Professor Mark Tooley

Retirement Transition Coach

Fellow, Royal Academy of Engineering
Chartered Engineer
Chartered Scientist

After many years in senior clinical, scientific and leadership roles within the NHS, Mark became increasingly interested in the human side of retirement — and the challenges people face when long-established routines and professional identities begin to change. His own experience of retirement played an important role in shaping Living Retirement.

Mark helps people think clearly about purpose, identity and relationships, encouraging thoughtful exploration and the confidence to approach retirement as an opportunity for renewal rather than simply an ending. During his NHS career he led major scientific departments and served as Director of Research within his hospital, contributing at board level to organisational change.

Outside his professional work, Mark enjoys time outdoors in his garden and allotment, running around his neighbourhood, and playing classical piano — especially Debussy and French repertoire.
